About the program

The Degree Program in Computer Science, University of Tsukuba offers a program named International program for frontier informatics (IPFI) (AY2019-AY2021).

Due to the rapid proliferation of big data and AI technologies, there have been growing demands for technical experts who have big data/AI skills and are able to solve various real problems in different problem domains.

Through the research and education, IPFI aims to train technical experts who are skilled in both 1) information technologies including IoT/bigdata/AI and 2) one of the specific problem domains in science or engineering.

This program offers MEXT scholarship for international students (4 masters and 4 doctoral students) to those who are eligible. See scholarship for more details.

The International program for frontier informatics (IPFI) offers a special scholarship for international students.

Scholarship details

The support offered by this scholarship is the same as the Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship. See related websites for more details:

Eligibility

There are a number of eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The details can be found in the following document. Please read it very carefully, and if you have any questions, please let us know by the form below.

NOTE: This document is for the students entering in AY2020. The detailed guideline for AY2021 entrance will be released later from the MEXT. Notice also that the detail may be modified from the one for AY2020 entrance.

Application procedure

The following shows the application procedure for the MEXT scholarshop.

1. Find your prospective academic supervisor

Please contact your prospective academic supervisor by e-mail, and get his/her consent of your application to the MEXT scholarship offered by IPFI program. The list of faculties can be found at the web site of the Degree Program in Computer Science:

2. Submit application documents (deadline: August 20th, 2021)

Submit your application via e-mail by attaching the following documents (in PDF format):

Cover page including i) the course to apply (Master's course/Doctoral course), ii) field of research and iii) the name of your prospective academic supervisor whom you contacted
CV (including photo)
Academic transcript of each academic year of the last university attended
Certificate of Graduation or Expected Graduation of the last university attended
Any certificate indicating the applicant's academic excellence at the most recent academic institution, such as GPA, class rank.

Research plan
Document indicating your English or Japanese proficiency such as: a grade report of TOEFL, IELTS, JLPT, etc.
- English: Score report of a language proficiency test that corresponds to B2 or higher level of CEFR
- Japanese: Certificate for passing the exam of N2 or higher level of JLPT

3. Examination (Late-October, 2021)

Screening and selection are made on the basis of the submitted application documents and an online oral examination.
NOTE: Prospective applicant will be contacted via e-mail after the preliminary screening based on the submitted documents.

Notification

(Mid-late-November, 2021) The examination result will be announced individually after the examination. The successful candidates are recommended to the MEXT as the scholarship candidates.
(Late-February, 2022) The official notification from MEXT will be announced individually after notification of the MEXT via e-mail.
